Invasive Species in Western PA: What to Remove From Your Property (and How to Do It Right)

Western Pennsylvania has some of the worst invasive plant pressure in the country. Here's what's likely growing on your property, why it matters, and the most effective removal methods.

<p>Western Pennsylvania has some of the worst invasive plant pressure in the country. If you own rural property, a wooded lot, or even a suburban yard with any naturalized areas, there's a good chance you're dealing with at least one invasive species — and probably several.</p><p>This guide covers the most common invasive plants we encounter on properties throughout the Pittsburgh area, why they're a problem, and the most effective removal methods for each.</p><h2>Why Invasive Species Are a Bigger Problem Than They Look</h2><p>Invasive plants aren't just an aesthetic issue. They outcompete native vegetation, reduce biodiversity, degrade wildlife habitat, and can significantly reduce your property's value and usability. Some species — like Japanese knotweed — can cause structural damage to foundations, driveways, and retaining walls. Others create dense thickets that make land unusable for farming, recreation, or development.</p><p>The other problem: most invasive species are extremely difficult to eliminate once established. Cutting them back without treating the root system almost always results in faster, thicker regrowth. Effective removal requires the right combination of mechanical removal and, in most cases, targeted herbicide treatment.</p><h2>The Most Common Invasive Species in Western PA</h2><h3>Multiflora Rose (<em>Rosa multiflora</em>)</h3><p><strong>What it looks like:</strong> Dense, arching shrub with small white flowers in spring and clusters of small red berries in fall. Stems have curved thorns. Can grow 10–15 feet tall and spread into impenetrable thickets.</p><p><strong>Why it's a problem:</strong> Spreads aggressively via birds eating the berries. Forms dense thickets that crowd out native plants, block fence lines, and make land unusable. Extremely common throughout Western PA.</p><p><strong>Best removal method:</strong> Forestry mulching for large infestations, followed by cut-stump herbicide treatment (triclopyr or glyphosate) on any regrowth. Cutting alone stimulates aggressive resprouting. Repeated treatment over 2–3 seasons is usually required for full control.</p><h3>Autumn Olive (<em>Elaeagnus umbellata</em>)</h3><p><strong>What it looks like:</strong> Large shrub or small tree with silvery-green leaves and small, speckled red berries in fall. Can grow 20 feet tall. Often found along roadsides, field edges, and disturbed areas.</p><p><strong>Why it's a problem:</strong> Fixes nitrogen in the soil, which actually changes soil chemistry and makes it harder for native plants to compete. Spreads prolifically via birds. One of the most aggressive invasive shrubs in the region.</p><p><strong>Best removal method:</strong> Cut-stump herbicide treatment is highly effective when done correctly. Cut the stem as close to the ground as possible and apply concentrated triclopyr to the cut surface immediately (within 60 seconds). For large infestations, forestry mulching followed by herbicide treatment of regrowth.</p><h3>Japanese Knotweed (<em>Reynoutria japonica</em>)</h3><p><strong>What it looks like:</strong> Hollow, bamboo-like stems with large heart-shaped leaves. Grows in dense stands 6–10 feet tall. Dies back in winter but re-emerges aggressively in spring from an extensive underground root system.</p><p><strong>Why it's a problem:</strong> One of the most aggressive invasive plants in the world. Spreads through underground rhizomes that can extend 20+ feet from the main stand. Can damage foundations, driveways, and drainage systems. Extremely difficult to eradicate.</p><p><strong>Best removal method:</strong> This is a long-term project. Mechanical removal alone is ineffective — even small root fragments left in the soil will resprout. The most effective approach is repeated foliar herbicide treatment (glyphosate or imazapyr) over multiple seasons, applied when plants are actively growing. Cutting and injecting herbicide into the hollow stems is also effective. Expect a 3–5 year commitment for full control.</p><h3>Garlic Mustard (<em>Alliaria petiolata</em>)</h3><p><strong>What it looks like:</strong> Biennial herb with heart-shaped leaves and small white flowers in spring. Smells like garlic when crushed. Common in woodland edges, trails, and disturbed forest areas.</p><p><strong>Why it's a problem:</strong> Releases chemicals into the soil that inhibit the growth of native plants and disrupt mycorrhizal fungi that native trees depend on. Spreads rapidly in disturbed woodland areas.</p><p><strong>Best removal method:</strong> Hand-pulling before seed set (spring, before flowers open) is effective for small infestations. Pull the entire root — plants left with roots intact will still set seed. For large infestations, foliar herbicide treatment in early spring when garlic mustard is actively growing and native plants are still dormant.</p><h3>Tree of Heaven (<em>Ailanthus altissima</em>)</h3><p><strong>What it looks like:</strong> Fast-growing tree with large compound leaves (15–25 leaflets). Distinctive unpleasant smell when leaves or stems are crushed. Common in disturbed areas, roadsides, and urban lots.</p><p><strong>Why it's a problem:</strong> Grows extremely fast (up to 6 feet per year), produces thousands of seeds, and sprouts aggressively from cut stumps and roots. Also the preferred host for the spotted lanternfly, an invasive insect that threatens Pennsylvania's agriculture and timber industries.</p><p><strong>Best removal method:</strong> Cut-stump herbicide treatment (triclopyr or glyphosate) immediately after cutting. Cutting without herbicide treatment results in prolific stump sprouting. For large trees, basal bark treatment or hack-and-squirt methods are effective.</p><h3>Burning Bush (<em>Euonymus alatus</em>)</h3><p><strong>What it looks like:</strong> Ornamental shrub with distinctive corky-winged stems and brilliant red fall color. Widely planted in landscaping but escapes into natural areas via bird-dispersed seeds.</p><p><strong>Why it's a problem:</strong> Spreads from landscaped areas into woodlands and natural areas, where it outcompetes native shrubs. Common in woodland edges throughout Western PA.</p><p><strong>Best removal method:</strong> Hand removal for small plants. Cut-stump herbicide treatment for established shrubs. Consider replacing with native alternatives like native viburnums, serviceberry, or native sumac.</p><h2>General Principles for Invasive Species Removal</h2><ol><li><strong>Don't just cut — treat.</strong> Cutting invasive shrubs without treating the root system almost always results in faster, thicker regrowth. Always follow mechanical removal with herbicide treatment on woody species.</li><li><strong>Timing matters.</strong> Cut-stump treatments are most effective in late summer and fall when plants are moving carbohydrates into the root system. Foliar treatments are most effective when plants are actively growing.</li><li><strong>Expect multiple treatments.</strong> Most invasive species require 2–3 years of follow-up treatment for full control. A single treatment rarely eliminates an established infestation.</li><li><strong>Start at the edges.</strong> Work from the outside of an infestation inward to prevent spreading seeds and root fragments to clean areas.</li><li><strong>Dispose of material carefully.</strong> Don't compost invasive plant material — many species can resprout from cut stems and root fragments.
